Chickens, just like any other animal, need water to survive. So, when you have your chickens cooped up, you need to provide them with easy access to water at all times. Sure. You can put a bowl of water in the area and hope for the best. However, for a multitude of reasons, this is not really a long-term solution. Instead, you need to invest in a chicken waterer.

The purpose of a chicken waterer is to provide your chickens with easy access to water. The best waterers are ‘self-refilling’ (up to a few gallons), and they are large enough and sturdy enough that all of your chickens are going to be able to have a drink without the risk of it being tipped over.

On this page, we are going to look at what we believe are the best chicken waterers on the market. Fice of them. Let’s jump right in and find you an awesome chicken waterer, shall we?

Little Giant Plastic Chicken Waterer

best chicken waterer

This chicken waterer boasts an awesome 10-gallon capacity. This means that it is going to be providing a lot of water to your chickens. This makes it ideal if you have a larger flock.

Since the entire construction is plastic, you can be sure that this chicken waterer is going to be able to easily put up with intense temperature fluctuations.

You do not have to worry about it cracking or anything like that. Don’t worry. This is a sturdy plastic and a sturdy waterer overall. This means that you do not have to worry about your chickens knocking it over, no matter how aggressive they are.

The best part is that the water is kept raised off of the floor. This means that there is zero need for you to worry about bugs and the like hopping into the water supply. Although, do bear in mind that this may be a touch too tall for bantam breeds of chicken.

Farm Tuff PG304

best chicken waterer

This is a smaller chicken waterer, having only a 3-gallon capacity, but it is ideal for smaller flocks. Since it is not raised as much as the previous option, it is also going to be ideal for the smaller breeds of chicken.

This is a pretty simple chicken waterer. It should take under a minute to remove the bottle, refill it, and then put it back into place again.

So, while it is not exactly brimming with features, it is ideal for those who want some of that ‘no fuss’ care for their chickens. If you want, you can even refill it while the chicken waterer bottle is in place. There is a cap on the top of it. So, ideal for those who are refilling their animal’s water with hoses and the like. This makes it so much simpler to deal with!

Farm Innovators Model HPF-100

chicken waterer

This is a bit more of a unique chicken waterer, and it has been designed for those who live in colder locations.

This chicken waterer has a built-in power supply and thermostat. Once you have your HPF-100 hooked up to a power supply, the thermostat will ensure that the water does not freeze. This means that your chickens should always have access to a steady supply of water, even during the colder months of the year.

Obviously, the downside is that if you want to use this functionality, your chicken coop is going to need to be within easy reach of a power supply. Not everybody has that luxury. Although, if you do, this is probably one of the best options on the market to keep your water from freezing.

Even when it is not plugged into a power supply, you have a perfectly functional chicken waterer for small flocks here. It boasts a 3-gallon capacity, which is more than fine for most situations.

5 Gallon Chicken Waterer

Again, we have another unique chicken waterer. This is because, unlike the other three options so far, this one does not actually have a water bowl that your chickens can drink out of. Instead, water is released through the water nipples on the tank.

Yes. The water nipples do limit the number of chickens that can drink from the chicken waterer at once. However, they have the benefit of not having water splashed about everywhere.

If you own chickens, then you will know just how messy some of them can be, and the last thing you want is to have water splashing about all over the bedding. It just means that you are going to need to replace it sooner as opposed to later.

Not having a water bowl to drink out of means that you do not need to worry about dirt and grime getting into the water supply which could contaminate it. Since this is a huge 5-gallons, it should be fine to water medium to large flocks of chickens.

You can refill it with a hose through the top of the chicken waterer too, which means you do not need to worry about hauling a 5-gallon chicken waterer a long distance.

Little Giant Miller Plastic Poultry Fountain

This is another 3-gallon option that is a bit on the simpler side of things, so do not expect it to be brimming with features. However, the simplicity of this bit of kit means that it is going to be a lot cheaper than other options on the market.

Many people report this as being one of the sturdiest and longest-lasting chicken waterers they have owned. Obviously, this means that it is going to need to be replaced at some point, but it should easily give you a good few years of use out of it.

One of the reasons as to why we love this chicken waterer so much is due to the handle on top of it. Obviously, you can refill it from the top of the water bottle using a hose. However, there is a handle that makes for easy transportation. Since it is just 3-gallons, it isn’t going to be too heavy to move about from place to place either.

Why not take a look at some of the chicken waterers on this list? We are sure that you will find more than one that tickles your fancy.

Harris Farms EZ Fill Chicken Waterer

With 3.5 or 6.25 gallon models available, this is another great waterer for your backyard coop, regardless if you keep it inside the coop or outside in the run, since it is made from a long-life plastic.

The great thing about this chicken waterer is that it has a float, which means the water in the tray doesn’t go back in the container to contaminate the whole water. The water inside will stay clean as long as it has water in it.

When filled with water, you can expect this chicken waterer to last about 3 to 4 days for 10 chickens, depends how hot it is in your area. During the winter or in the cooler months it can last up to 5 days for 10 chickens. You can do the math.

Lixit Feeder/Waterer for Chickens

Great cute looking dual purpose chicken waterer that can be used as feeder as well. It is cheap option that you may consider if you have a small flock.

Since it can hold 64 oz of water or 4 lb of food and given its affordable price, you can buy two of them and use one as a feeder, the other as waterer.

That is what we did. We have two of them for our chicks. It has a great quality and is very easy to clean.

Royal Rooster Chicken Feeder and Waterer 1 gal

best chicken waterer

Feeder capacity: 6.5 gal.
Waterer capacity: 1 gal.

If you have a backyard flock of 4 to 6 chickens then this set of chicken feeder and waterer would be perfect for you and your chickens. The water will stay at least for two days for 6 chickens.

Made from PVC plastics you can hook them straight onto the mesh of your chicken coop. Do you know what this means?

Having the chicken waterer on the ground you would probably have to clean it several times a day from poop. But, this one will stays out of poop’s way, providing clean and fresh water to your chickens.
