5 Things to Consider Before You Find Flemish Giant Rabbit For Sale

The Flemish Giants can be great pets and companions, but there are some important considerations before buying one.

1. The Size

I think think that a lot of people underestimate just how large a Flemish Giant rabbit can get. When you first get one as a small bunny, they are going to be sizeable, but they are not going to be a patch on what they become.

Flemish Giant Rabbits for sale

It is not uncommon for the Flemish Giant rabbit to be between 13-15 lb. There are some rabbits that have grown as large as 22 lb. The size of them can end up rivaling that of a medium-sized dog.

This is not the type of rabbit that you are going to be able to keep in a small apartment. It is not the type of rabbit that you will be able to have cooped up in a rabbit cage all day either.

It needs to have a lot of space to roam around in. Remember, large rabbits will need to have a whole load of exercise if they want to be healthy.

Obviously, most people are going to be putting their Flemish in a cage at night. It helps the rabbit to feel safe and secure. It is important that you take the time to find a rabbit cage that has been designed for the Flemish Giant rabbit.

The vast majority of rabbit cages have not. The rabbit cage is going to be a rather sizeable expense because they are so uncommon.

2. Grooming

One of the parks of having as Flemish Giant rabbit is the fact that they do not require that much in the way of grooming.

Obviously, you are going to need to be checking that rabbit each week to ensure that they do not have any cuts, scrapes, or matted fur. However, due to the fact that the fur on these rabbits is rather short, you probably won’t need to be brushing them all that often.

You should remember that the nails of the Flemish Giant rabbit will grow at a far more rapid pace than some other rabbit breeds.

This means that you will need to have a proper grooming kit before you purchase the rabbit. You will likely need to be trimming their nails once or twice per month.

If you don’t, then they are going to find it incredibly uncomfortable to walk around. Long nails on a rabbit are a bad thing at the best of times.

When you have long nails on a Flemish rabbit, they are going to be putting a rather substantial amount of body weight on them. This is painful.

3. The Diet

The Flemish Giant rabbit is going to eat a lot of food. It is a larger rabbit, after all.

The bulk of your rabbit’s diet will be hay. It is going to be eating a lot of hay. Where would you put it?

The rest of the rabbit’s diet can be standard rabbit feed. The dry food is good. Fruits and vegetables, which would be regarded as treats, will be no more than 10% of the diet.

This is one of the most expensive rabbit breeds to feed. It can cost a ton of cash every single month. In some places, it can even be tough to get hold of all of the hay that they need to consume.

4. The Temperament

Despite their size, the Flemish Giant rabbit is one of the friendliest rabbit breeds that you can buy. Although, you do have to remember that they are still rabbits. Rabbits are naturally timid.

You should also remember that you will need to have more than one rabbit. They are sociable creatures. Unless you are interacting with your rabbit almost constantly, they will need a special bunny pal.

Before you do get yourself a Flemish Giant rabbit, we suggest that you watch a few videos on handling this rabbit. This is because it is an incredibly fragile rabbit if not handled correctly.

If they put too much weight on certain bones, they can just break.

5. Who is the Flemish Giant Rabbit Suitable For?

The Flemish Giant rabbit is going to be best-suited to those that have larger homes where the rabbit can roam about in. In an ideal world, you would keep the Flemish Giant rabbit living in your home. It doesn’t do as well outside.

You may not even need to have a cage inside of your home for this rabbit. They can make do with a dog bed. This is one of the few rabbit breeds that you will be able to train to use a litterbox too.

This isn’t really a breed that we would recommend to families with smaller children. This is because it is a rabbit that is a bit too heavy for children to handle.

If you are a homesteader looking for a meat rabbit breed, then this is the perfect breed for you. The Giants are excellent animals for homesteading.
