Valais Blacknose Sheep Characteristics
Have you ever seen a more adorable sheep than the Valais Blacknose Sheep? These sheep are native to the Swiss Alps and are easily recognizable by their black ears, faces and noses.
In addition to their black faces and noses, Valais Blacknose sheep have black spots on the ankle and the front knees.
Valais Blacknose sheep are a medium-sized breed of sheep. The females typically range in height from 72 to 78 cm, and the males range in height from 75 to 83 cm.
In terms of weight, the females usually weigh between 70 and 90 kg, and the males usually weigh between 80 and 125 kg.
Valais Blacknose Sheep are very social animals, and they are also known for being very friendly animals, and they will often come up to humans to say hello.
Their fleece is thick and soft, perfect for making cozy sweaters or blankets. They are a hardy breed and can withstand cold temperatures very well. In fact, they are so well-adapted to cold weather that they are sometimes used as guards for other animals against predators!
The Truth About Valais Blacknose Sheep in the United States
There are a few things you should know before making your purchase. First and foremost, there are no (100%) full-blood Valais Blacknose sheep in the US. This is because the breed is relatively new to the country.
Instead, breeders are breeding domestic sheep with 100% Valais Blacknose sheep frozen semen imported from Switzerland or New Zealand.
This process takes at least 5 generations to achieve full Valais Blacknose sheep.
The F1 generation is 50% Valais, the F2 generation is 75%, the F3 generation is 88%, the F4 generation is 94%, and the F5 generation is 97% Valais.
Since there is no 100% full-blood sheep in the US at this time, there are some breeders who are working on producing them. We have listed most of these breeders below.
It is expected that within the next few years, there will be some full-blood Valais Blacknose sheep in the US.
What does this mean for potential buyers? Nothing at all, really. The fourth or fifth generation of Valais Blacknose sheep is just as good as the full blood, and they are still considered to be 100% Valais.

The price for one of Valais Blacknose sheep can range from $4,000 to $25,000 each.
